O'Donovan Scholarships

The Governing Board of the School of Celtic Studies at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies awards up to four research scholarships annually, or from time to time when resources permit, to doctoral or post-doctoral students. These scholarships are tenable for three years (subject to annual review). Stipend (tax-free): €25,000 (with PhD), €17,500 (without PhD). The usual commencement date is 1^st October.

The School of Celtic Studies is able to offer two additional scholarships this year.

The applicant should also ensure that references from at least two referees are sent to the School Administrator by the above date.

The date at which the applicant wishes the Scholarship to commence and proposed length of tenure should be indicated. The usual commencement date is the 1st of October and the normal tenure is three years.

Applications are particularly welcome from candidates who have completed, or are close to completing, their PhD. The stipend is €25,000 for candidates with a PhD.

The School of Celtic Studies is an eligible organization for the Irish Research Council funding schemes.

Bergin Fellowships

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is an independent statutory research body established in 1940. Through its three constituent Schools it pursues fundamental research in Celtic Studies, Theoretical Physics and Cosmic Physics. The DIAS is funded by and reports directly to the Department of Education and Science.

Aim of Fellowships

The aims of the DIAS Fellowship Scheme are twofold, namely to make available to promising researchers near the start of their career a small number of relatively well-resourced medium-term positions in a world-class research environment from which to launch their academic careers; and to stimulate the research programmes of each of the constituent Schools of DIAS with periodic infusions of new people and ideas.

The name of the Fellowship Scheme of the School of Celtic Studies honours Professor Osborn J. Bergin, first director of the School of Celtic Studies, and one of the outstanding Irish scholars of his generation.

Eligibility

Candidates should hold the degree of PhD (or equivalent) and should have relevant research experience.

Selection Criteria

The award of DIAS Fellowships is based solely on the following criteria:

• The candidate's research record and promise
• The quality of the research proposal submitted
• The contribution of the proposed research to the overall research strategy of the School.

Research support facilities

Fellows will have full access to the School's research infrastructure including library facilities and use of a computer. Fellows will be eligible to receive support for travel for research purposes when funds allow.

Obligations of Fellows

Fellows will be required to submit a progress report every twelve months to the Director of the School for presentation to the Governing Board detailing the work undertaken during that period and giving an outline of work for the following year.

Duties

Fellows are required to devote themselves to research in consultation with the Director of the School and to participate fully in the life of the School. They should be present to attend talks and seminars and contribute to the publishing programme of the School. They may be requested to offer occasional seminars, to assist in the supervision of research students, to cooperate in the preparation of funding proposals, and to collaborate in School projects.

Conditions of Appointment

Fellows will be appointed on the basis of a fixed-term contract of three to five years. Employment for the first year will be on a probationary basis. The salary scale attaching to the position ranges from €45,769–50,976. Starting salary will be at the minimum point.
